A sustainable public toilet? Thanks, Portland.

Portland officials say the Loos buck many of the conventions of public toilets: They are not installed in out-of-the-way spots where no one will see them. Rather, most are placed along sidewalks in full public view.

They are not self-cleaning, but are made of prison-grade steel with plumbing so basic that they are almost impossible to damage, and a twice-a-day check by maintenance staff seems to keep them in good working order.

The only water faucet is on the outside, making customers less likely to linger for hair-washing or laundry.

Perhaps most important, they aren’t all that private. Louvered slats from foot level to knee level and again just above head level make activity inside somewhat visible, and audible, to passersby.

While illustrated books that stood on their own as splendid works of art have long existed in Japan, there was no history of the bound book as a luxury item as there was in France. They were mostly using cheaper ways of printing books. They were not yet exposed to the type of book I create which has a lot of thought and heart in it. Decorative bookbinding had to first be brought in line with Japanese tastes before local audiences could appreciate it. Eventually, the Japanese people began to appreciate elements of this craft like the use of deluxe Japanese papers and mosaic-onlaid leathers.

Full reproductive rights now: Access to safe, legal abortion and birth control – on demand. We want healthcare that covers these services and access to it for all women. We want the information that we need to stay healthy, including an end to abstinence-only sex education in our schools.

Defend women in the workplace: Close the wage gap and provide equal pay for equal work. All jobs must offer maternity leave and stop penalizing working mothers. End sexual harassment at work.

Stop the budget cuts: Cutting federal and state social services punishes poor women. We demand government funding for social services that millions of working and poor women depend on. Jobs, education, housing and healthcare are women’s rights.

We want full equality and respect now: Fight racism, sexism and anti-LGBT bigotry. Stop the exploitation and commercialization of women in mass media. An injury to one is an injury to all!
